1) 98.4 Blue Devils Spanish Fantasy-Night Streets-Spanish Heart 2) 97.7 Cadets Bergen County West Side Story 3) 96.2 Phantom Regiment Firedance-Clare de Lune-Dangerous Ground

My drum corp won, and his took second place. Joe always acknowledged the superiority of the Blue Devils, but his heart was with the Cadets of Bergen County, still is.

Our backs were breaking, eyes burning, and we were tired to the bone, but... but the music. Twice! Twice we heard those nearly-children play their hearts out. First for the competition, and then as sweat-stained victors. First performing as a team to win, and then as individuals in love with the notes, the steps, the turn of a head and a smile. They stood, spread out across the field, beaming with pure joy. It lit up the night, and my heart.

As the last note was played, every one of the Blue Devils faced the stands and raised arms and we, the fans, raised them in a sort of salute-embrace and held our breath along with them for just a second, and adored them, and it almost felt like forever.
